Science Travel

Several of the places described on this site can be visited. Book ahead where you can: places are limited and the rules change from season to season.

JPL

JPL offers free public tours on weekdays, and also runs special open days called Explore JPL. Tickets are limited and often all reserved in advance. Visitors aged 18 and over need a valid government-issued photo ID that matches their ticket.

Mount Wilson Observatory

The observatory is reached by the Angeles Crest Highway (California State Route 2) from the 210 freeway at La Cañada Flintridge. Parking requires a U.S. Forest Service Adventure Pass. In spring and summer the grounds are open daily; the 100-inch telescope gallery, the museum and an interferometry exhibit are free to visit, and docents lead walking tours at weekends. The observatory also holds public star-gazing nights.

The summit is high and the weather can turn quickly, with fog or snow. The tour covers about a mile and is not suitable for people with heart or breathing conditions or limited mobility.

The Gamble House

The 1908 Greene and Greene house in Pasadena is open to visitors through its conservancy, which operates it for the city. It shows the craft and engineering of the Arts and Crafts period at its finest.
